Changes in the Distribution of Income in México and Trade Liberalization constituye una importante aportación al debate sobre las políticas de restructuración económica en México. Con un enfoque en el rápido proceso de liberación del comercio, la doctora Diana Alarcón se basa en la teoría apoyada por varios economistas que sugieren que tal liberalización tendería a regularizar la distribución de los ingresos y reducir la pobreza. Es un hecho que las consecuencias inmediatas de la liberalización del comercio son la desigualdad en los ingresos y el incremento de la pobreza; estos resultados están basados en un detallado análisis de la información del Instituto Nacional de Estadística, Geografía e Informática (INEGI), extraído de la Encuesta de Ingreso y Egreso en 1989, y en la comparación de estos resultados con aquellos que se recabaron en 1984. Es inusual en los trabajos de investigación que se refieren a las relaciones entre las políticas de comercio y la distribución del ingreso encontrar un examen tan extenso basado en información original de un país en desarrollo.
